Today we talked about the main idea or the thesis of chapter eight. I thought that chapter eight is about how farmer developed his life goal to "provide a preferential option for the poor" and his actions to reach that goal. This chapter shows the upbringing of Farmer after visiting Cange for the first time and I think that to him, it was a life changing experience that opened his eyes and see that this was what he was meant to do, which was to become a doctor for the poor Haitians. In this chapter we see Dr. Farmer taking his first steps to reaching his goal by first saving money and building a blood center for the hospital he worked in and then leaving it all to start his own hospital because he believed that those other hospitals were not for the poor. In my opinion, Farmer is showing great dedication to his work, especially when he is making an effort to learn about the people in Haiti by observing first hand what the book does not tell him. And this makes him an outstanding doctor.
