Influence's of Farmer Chp. 6

After reading chapter six, I found out some interesting facts that may have influenced Farmer to take a role in helping and sacrificing his time in helping the Haitian community. One person that I assumed influenced Farmer was Rudolf Virchow. Virchow wasn't a real known person in the medical world, but he had many significant findings that made him stand out to Farmer. Some accomplishments was his defining of Medical anthropology, finding of many nursing school and hospitals as well as coining fifty medical terms that many people still use today. His admiration for Virchow and his work may have lead to Farmers idea of helping others out without the need of payment or incentives.
Another person who I thought had a big part in Farmers decision to help Haitian people, was Sister Julianna De Wolf. During the time he met Sister Julianna, Farmer was already craving for events that many Americans did not know of. Through Sister Julianna, Farmer found out and met many Haitians in North Carolina tobacco plantations, where he saw their living conditions and working conditions that influenced him to right a paper about them called, "Haitians without a Home." After his encounter Farmer became so obsessed with Haitians and their history believing that they were the underdogs of the underdogs. As a kid Farmer was really interested in the "Lord Of The Rings" By Tolkein, and he compared Haitian history to that of "Lord of The Rings."
These two weren't the only influences in Farmers life to take the liberty to help those others out. Through his childhood he admired his Father and family due to the fact that even though they did not live the idyllic lifestyle his Father still hope those in need and he saw that a very admirable character that he wanted to attain. But assuming from what I read in chapter five and six, these are some main people for how and why farmer has become who he is and why he has done so much for the Haitian people.
