Help requires sacrifice.

Today, we discussed what is the main assumption that the book, "Mountains Beyond Mountains" implies. After reading several pages, we agreed that in order to help, you need to make sacrifices. I personally agree with this because I do not think it is possible to give and not lose anything at all. Even if what you are sacrificing something that is very insignificant you are still losing something. Say that you see a homeless man on the street, and you stop by and give him some change. Although it seems like you have not given much, you gave that person your time to stop and give him money that was yours. Your small sacrifice helped him, and I think that Paul Farmer is making a big effort to help the people of Haiti, but it truely does require a lot of sacrifice from him giving professional medical care to the poorest of the poor practically for free, his time away from his personal life and his family, a life of luxary, and all the money that he earns for the Haitians.
