Rhetorical Device: Paradox

Definition: a statement that appears contradictory but is actually true.


Function: To point out an apparent contradiction.


Examples:
  • "I must be cruel to be kind." (Shakespeare)
  • "War is Peace" "Freedom is Slavery" "Ignorance is Strength" (George Orwell, 1984)
  • Nobody goes to that restaurant, it's too crowded.
  • If you get this message, call me; if you don't, then don't worry about it.
